"What would you get if Lemmy and Rick James had a musical baby and The Bee Gees were the godparents and Benny Hill was the hilarious Uncle?"
The Answer?
Titwinkle - a funk 'n' rock band from Canada.
Hailing from Barrie, Ontario, Titwinkle is The Hung (guitar and vocals) and Alasdair Nigel Forsythe "Slickfinger" (bass and drums).
Slickfinger and The Hung have known each other since they were 16 years old when Slickfinger, on a mutual friend's recommendation, auditioned as drummer for The Hung's "high voltage high school hard rock band." After four years of skyrocketing to dazzling mediocrity, the band eventually went their separate ways due to jobs, bills and life.
Then in 2013, after decades of not playing music, Slickfinger started writing songs on his bass guitar, causing him to come up with the idea of Titwinkle - a rock band with funk and disco influences with a heavy 70's vibe. Confident he had something worth pursuing, Slickfinger tracked down The Hung and pitched the band concept with a rough version of a song that would eventually become Funk City. Intrigued, The Hung dusted off his guitar (which had not been touched in at least a quarter of a century) and jammed it out with rusty strings, defying both time and tetanus.
Then, in a whirlwind of musical madness over the next few months, the duo had a catalogue of songs under their belts and both were surprised by the realization that they had completed the ground work for an album.
Now it was The Hung's turn to pitch an idea to Slickfinger.
Titwinkle could release their own album independently.
The Hung was confident that with some hard work, they could record and produce the album as well as film their own videos and market their music.
So the duo rolled up their sleeves and built a recording studio (Sound Munition), a management company (The SoundDen Agency), a film company for videos, (Harry Bach Films) and a record label, (Helfion Records).
The Hung became a sound engineer and Slickfinger became a film maker. Then, with blood shot eyes and whatever spare time remained, the duo worked on developing a marketing plan for Titwinkle.
The result of this sleep deprived mayhem is Titwinkle's debut album, The Hard, The Soft and The Funky. A fitting title for an eleven song album with hard rock anthems, moody ballads and quirky tunes with hip swinging grooves and tongue in cheek lyrics.
"The album does have different vibes but they are all rooted in Titwinkle's core sound of guitar, bass and drums," The Hung explained. “Music shouldn't be forced to fit into a specific box. It should be created freely and brought into the world without the need to conform to any cookie cutter genre. ”
"I am very proud of the album The Hung and I created," added Slickfinger. “Originally, Mrs. Slickfinger had no idea I had been a musician in my youth. In fact when we first met, I was making a living as a self defense instructor. It was only when I finally let her listen to one of the songs I had written for Titwinkle that she truly became convinced that I had never been a musician at all…”
